The Forty Foot Double Breaker

I often tell people that I like to teach "How to play golf." "Oh you mean course management," is often the response.  This short example might give you a better idea of what I mean -

You have a 40 ft. double break putt down a steep incline. What could you be thinking if you were playing a game?

"I hope I get this close," or perhaps "I hope I don't miss this too badly, or perhaps "Gee, it would be embarrassing if this rolled off the green," or perhaps (if you are a good player) "Why was I so stupid to hit my shot to here."

Or you could think, "I'm going to sink this bad boy."

But, it isn't likely that you'll actually make it, so wouldn't that kind of thinking lead to disappointment?

We need to understand that a game includes the possibility of winning and the possibility of losing. In other words we have to be willing to win and willing to lose.

Notice how those first ideas demonstrate an unwillingness to win and a fear of losing. That is to say, those ideas don't allow us to actually play a game - and you will never play your best if you don't play at all.

(since this is the first issue you should know that is my real hair)
